BLOOM, Louise

My creative process derives from an interest in narrative as a vehicle of transformation. The work invites close reading and aims to surprise, stimulate, incite, and sometimes shock the intellect. My print works on paper combine both illustration and text, and are often intertexual and allusive in nature; the result is a marriage between medium and message that employs irony to unseat the viewer’s expectations. The artist book genre, which seeks to reinvent the relationship between aesthetics and the book form, is of particular appeal to me.. Text, in my prints, is a palimpsestic element; it appears and disappears, hiding and revealing in the same turn, evoking an interplay between sense and nonsense. Moreover, it informs the work in a textural manner.
